Senior Pet Care: Special Considerations
Westlake Animal Hospital provides specialized senior pet wellness exams for dogs and cats seven years of age or older. We recommend two wellness visits per year. This allows us to detect medical concerns early before they developed into full-blown disease.
Senior Pet Wellness Exam: Twice a year for life
Your senior pet’s wellness exam includes a comprehensive physical exam, vaccination review, and early detection testing. Our senior early disease detection screening includes the following:
- Intestinal parasite screen
- Senior blood profile—Screens the liver, kidneys, anemia, electrolytes, and thyroid testing
- Feline FIV, leukemia virus, and heartworm (for cats)
- Abdominal ultrasound
- Chest X-ray
- Heartworm and tick-borne disease detection for canines
Senior Pet Vaccinations
After the age of ten, we will review your senior pet to determine the best vaccination options. Not all elderly pets need to receive certain vaccinations, and we are committed to protecting your pet without the risk of over-vaccination.
Senior Pet Arthritis Treatment
Arthritis is a common senior pet ailment. Fortunately, there are many treatment options available. Be sure to ask your veterinarian about available treatment and therapy options.
